The Top 10 Cities For Sales Jobs

Those seeking work in the sales field may want to consider setting their sights on California.

Compensation information and job search site Glassdoor.com took a look at the cities providing the best compensation and the most jobs to sales-industry job seekers. To determine the final list, Glassdoor reviewed U.S. metro areas, identifying those with the highest median total compensation for both corporate and account sales jobs, excluding retail sales jobs.

To be included on the list, metros had to have a minimum of 50 salary reports shared by local employees prior to June 26, 2015. Job opportunities, additionally, were determine by active job listings posted to Glassdoor as of July 8th this year.

The golden state dominates the top of the list, with San Jose taking first place and San Francisco claiming runner up. Compensation is better in San Jose, where sales professionals bring in median total pay of $127,500, compared to San Francisco’s $100,000. Sales employees there also earn the highest commissions–$40,000, annually–of any on the list.

But San Francisco has 2,965 sales job openings currently, nearly three times as many as San Jose.

Representing the east coast at the top of the list are Boston, in third place, and New York, in fourth place and with 5,194 job openings–the most of any city on this list. Los Angeles, California, rounds out the top five.

Houston, Texas, in seventh place, is the highest ranked city on the list that’s not on the east or west coasts.
